European Week for Sustainable Development 2023: OiEau works to promote access to quality water and the protection of aquatic environments

Published on 09/21/23

The European Week for Sustainable Development (EWSD) runs from 18 September to 8 October 2023.

Originally a French event, the ESDW became European in 2015. It aims to raise awareness of Agenda 2030, the UN's sustainable development programme, by organising activities that encourage stakeholders in all regions to make an active commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular.

These 17 SDGs aim to end poverty through education, health and social protection, while combating climate change and protecting the environment.

Although SDG 6 is specifically dedicated to drinking water and sanitation, water is at the heart of several other MDGs. Access to water and sanitation is essential for reducing poverty, hunger, inequality, health and well-being, peace, etc.

Through its 4 complementary fields of expertise, OiEau contributes to the achievement of the SDG 6:

OiEau, a recognised public interest association, with environmental protection accreditation, works on a daily basis to

  • preserve the proper functioning of aquatic environments and maintain the quality of water resources;
  • ensure that everyone has access to drinking water and efficient wastewater systems,
  • promote Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), which combines economic efficiency, social equity and environmental sustainability,
  • disseminate Nature-based Solutions (NBS) to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
