European Week for Sustainable Development 2023: OiEau works to promote access to quality water and the protection of aquatic environments

The European Week for Sustainable Development (EWSD) runs from 18 September to 8 October 2023.
Originally a French event, the ESDW became European in 2015. It aims to raise awareness of Agenda 2030, the UN's sustainable development programme, by organising activities that encourage stakeholders in all regions to make an active commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular.
These 17 SDGs aim to end poverty through education, health and social protection, while combating climate change and protecting the environment.
Although SDG 6 is specifically dedicated to drinking water and sanitation, water is at the heart of several other MDGs. Access to water and sanitation is essential for reducing poverty, hunger, inequality, health and well-being, peace, etc.
Through its 4 complementary fields of expertise, OiEau contributes to the achievement of the SDG 6:
- Technical and institutional support & Cooperation: by accompanying the implementation of actions at all levels, from local to cross-border,
- Training & Educational Engineering: by increasing the skills of the thousands of people in the field who attend our numerous training courses each year, for all levels, dedicated to a wide variety of themes including drinking water and sanitation,
- Data & Information Systems: by collecting and processing data to produce knowledge, a real decision-making tool,
- Networking of water stakeholders: by sharing information, tools and experiences on common themes, to promote participation, efficiency and innovation.
OiEau, a recognised public interest association, with environmental protection accreditation, works on a daily basis to
- preserve the proper functioning of aquatic environments and maintain the quality of water resources;
- ensure that everyone has access to drinking water and efficient wastewater systems,
- promote Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), which combines economic efficiency, social equity and environmental sustainability,
- disseminate Nature-based Solutions (NBS) to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
