Portals and Websites

Demand for good environmental data management continues to grow, especially because of the exponential increase in data and their potential reuse through online tools. Websites and portals play a key role in sharing available knowledge and raising awareness among stakeholders. In fact, these activities are a central part of every organisation’s communication strategy.

Once data are properly managed within an information system, they can then be communicated – as long as the organisation in question employs the best practices and specific information technologies that OiEau has been developing since its inception. OiEau therefore develops interoperable websites and portals for sharing and communicating water and environmental data in France, in Europe and worldwide, with customers and partners in 60 countries, potentially incorporating data visualisation tools (graphics and dynamic maps) and search engines and using open-source solutions. They are specifically designed to support knowledge and decision-making, and are generally managed by OiEau using its own hosted infrastructure, which is currently undergoing certification to ISO 27000 (Information Security Management Systems).

For OiEau, developing online portals is not an end in itself – they support work carried out in other areas, such as by:

  • promoting an activity or project,
  • building knowledge bases via direct uploading or automatic harvesting of interoperable systems,
  • setting up collaborative work and information-sharing spaces,
  •  serving as vehicles for information and the dissemination of knowledge,
  • supporting networking activities,
  • offering online training,
  • providing online data processing and analysis services, etc.

OiEau takes a long-term approach, aiming to ensure that the tools implemented are sustainable. With this aim in mind, OiEau’s teams can lead user groups, transfer user skills and maintain the solutions it implements.
