World Climate Day 2023

Published on 12/08/23

Every year, 8 December marks World Climate Day, which aims to raise awareness of and tackle climate change.

Climate change affects the water cycle, modifying rainfall and temperature, causing more frequent and intense floods and droughts, reducing snow cover and melting glaciers. They alter ecosystems and raise sea levels and their consequences.

OiEau relies on its 4 areas of expertise to contribute to the fight against global warming.

Support & Cooperation

The LIFE Water&Climate project aims to support long-term local decision-making for water management adapted to the climate.

The aim is to help those involved in the local management of water resources, particularly in the context of Sub-basin management plan, to assess the effects of climate change, take them into account in their planning and implement adaptation measures.

New project results were updated in November, and can be found on the dedicated page of the Gest'eau website.

Training & Skills

The International Office for Water offers a wide range of training courses that take climate change into account, in connection with rainwater management, wetland protection, NRWM and the circular economy.

Our training centre has a platform dedicated to integrated stormwater management, enabling practical work to be carried out and the skills to be applied as effectively as possible.

Networking of stakeholders

In 2021, the World Water Council, The Nature Conservancy, OiEau and INBO, for which it provides the permanent technical secretariat, launched the initiative to sign the "Water and Nature" declaration.

The "Water and Nature" declaration underlines the interdependence between water and the environment and emphasises the need to preserve aquatic ecosystems and water resources and thus ensure sustainable water management in the long term.

Data & Information Systems

The "Water & Biodiversity" portal, managed by OiEau, lists a range of scientific and technical documents on water and biodiversity produced by the public sector. It brings together in one place, accessible free of charge, guides, studies, audit reports and reliable methodological elements produced and validated by public institutions.
