2024, a very important year for the global water community, at every level!

Published on 01/04/24

Over the next twelve months, a wide range of stakeholders in the water sector will be meeting in France, Europe and around the world.

The key theme of Water Resources Management in a context of climate change will be at the heart of the discussions. Other related themes will also be addressed: biodiversity, governance, drinking water & sanitation, urban planning, waste & circular economy, risk management, Nature-based Solutions (NBS), environmental services, agriculture, industry, etc.

OiEau looks forward to seeing you at these meetings, where it will be sharing its expertise and experience with a wide range of partners.

World Water Forum

From 18 to 24 May 2024, the 10th World Water Forum will take place in Bali, Indonesia. The theme of this year's Forum will be "Water for Shared Prosperity", providing an opportunity to exchange knowledge and practices on a wide range of water-related topics.

60th anniversary of the first Water Law

In 2024, France will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of its first Water Law (french link), which introduced water management at basin level with the creation of the water agencies, which implemented the "polluter pays" and "user pays" principles in the "water pays for water" approach.

It has since been enriched by other laws (1992, 2004, 2006) that now organise water governance in France, in line with the European Water Framework Directive, which directs all water policy towards results-based objectives in order to meet the multiple challenges of climate change and water scarcity.

This celebration will give rise to a series of meetings at which OiEau experts will be keen to present the solutions we have developed.

INBO General Meeting

In 1994, OiEau created the International Network of Basin Organisations, which now has 192 member organisations from 88 countries, and still provides its Permanent Secretariat.

The main mission of this network is to support all initiatives in favour of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the catchment areas of national or transboundary rivers, lakes or aquifers, in order to reconcile economic growth, social justice, protection of the environment and water resources, and the participation of civil society.

2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of the existence of this Network, whose members will be meeting at the General Assembly in Bordeaux, France, from 7 to 10 October.

At the heart of the discussions and debates will be a wide range of topics linked to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, including adaptation to climate change, the importance of good basin governance, international and cross-border cooperation as a driving force for peace, REUT, etc.
