Aquatic Biodiversity Letter - September 2025 - Pibales or elvers: threats to grey gold

Published on 10/01/25

The September 2025 issue of OIEau's ‘Aquatic Biodiversity’ newsletter discusses the survival of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in the face of anthropogenic pressure.

Whether it is called a glass eel or pibale (in Occitan, pibalo), this fry is threatened with extinction.

Nicknamed ‘grey gold, white gold or new white ivory’, this species is the target of illegal fishing. The low stock of elvers results in a high purchase price, which arouses greed and leads to poaching and illegal trade.

The ‘Aquatic Biodiversity’ newsletter looks at recent legal responses.
