SCREEN project: study trip to strengthen cooperation on space hydrology

A delegation from the Organisation for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) visited Toulouse from 15 to 20 September 2025 as part of the SCREEN project. With the support of OiEau and its French scientific partners, this visit provided an opportunity to discuss the contributions of space hydrology and strengthen capacities for monitoring and coordinated water management in the Senegal River basin.
From 15 to 20 September 2025, a delegation from the Organisation for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) undertook a study trip to Toulouse as part of the SCREEN project – Monitoring and Control of Water Resources.
The SCREEN project, financed by the French Water Agency Adour-Garonne, is an international cooperation project aimed at strengthening water resource monitoring and management capacities in the Senegal River basin. Led by the OMVS with the support of the IRD, HydroMatters, the CNES and OiEau, it is developing innovative tools combining satellite data (altimetry, imagery), field observations and hydrological modelling. The data collected will support coordinated, resilient and sustainable water resource management in the context of climate change.
This mission, organised with the support of OiEau, aimed to strengthen scientific and technical cooperation between OMVS and its European partners.
Discussions focused on spatial hydrology tools, in particular satellite altimetry, hydrological modelling, data assimilation and the integration of information into Water Information Systems. The delegation also discussed innovative applications such as the RAINCELL device (precipitation monitoring using telecommunications networks).
This trip enabled the next stages of the project to be prepared, particularly in terms of training, and prospects for long-term collaboration to be outlined.
As a technical assistance organisation, OiEau is supporting these exchanges in order to promote the implementation of innovative tools for the collaborative management of water resources, with a view to building resilience to climate change and promoting sustainable development in the Senegal River basin.
Following on from this mission in Toulouse, a regional training course on space hydrology was held in Conakry from 29 September to 4 October 2025 in connection with the DYNOBA project, also funded by the AFD. It brought together technical experts from OMVS, the Niger Basin Authority (ABN) and the Organisation for the Development of the Gambia River (OMVG), alongside national focal points and scientific partners from the two projects.
This session aims to strengthen the skills of regional actors to enable them to better appropriate modern monitoring and modelling tools for the concerted and sustainable management of water resources in West African river basins.
