SCREEN Project - Strengthening water resource monitoring and management capacities in the Senegal River basin through innovative tools
The project in brief
The SCREEN project (Monitoring and Control of Water Resources) supports OMVS in implementing its sustainable water and environmental management policy by promoting an integrated approach to resources in the face of the challenges posed by climate change. This initiative is also part of the DYNOBA project (Dynamisation des Appuis aux Organismes de Bassin Transfrontaliers en Afrique), which aims to strengthen the capacities of African transboundary basin organisations, particularly on issues related to integrated water resources management (IWRM) in a context of increased climate variability.
Component 2 of the SCREEN project aims to strengthen the monitoring, forecasting and management of water resources in the Senegal River basin through the operational implementation of the most advanced satellite techniques in hydrology, in support of conventional in situ hydrometry. The work focuses on integrating remote sensing data to improve the accuracy of observations, the reliability of forecasts and the coordinated management of the basin.
Applications include hydrological modelling, strategic and real-time management, flood and drought prevention, and support for sectoral uses: hydropower, agriculture, navigation, drinking water and the preservation of aquatic ecosystems.
Activities are organised around four areas: estimating flows in near real time, mapping and monitoring water quality, developing a platform for exploiting and sharing satellite data, and building capacity in spatial hydrology.
The direct beneficiaries are the OMVS High Commission, OMVS management companies and technical committees, and national hydrological services. The overall aim is to provide the OMVS system with modern, interoperable tools for optimised management of water resources in the Senegal River basin.
OiEau's missions
Project management assistance (PMA) in the implementation of Components 2 and 3 relating to space hydrology:
- Technical and scientific advice on space hydrology (identification of operational needs, definition of technical content and coordination of actions),
- Overall technical monitoring of activities and support for training and skills transfer,
- Facilitation of dialogue between researchers, engineers and end users,
- Promotion and dissemination of project results within the space hydrology community.
All of these services aim to strengthen technical expertise, institutional coordination and the sustainability of the SCREEN project's achievements.
