A survey on practices to reduce the presence of macro-waste in urban networks

Urban networks have been identified as transfer routes for waste into aquatic environments, whether rivers or the marine environment.
A study carried out in Brest estimated that 3.3 tonnes of waste passed through the city's stormwater networks each year.At national level, waste in wastewater or stormwater systems is targeted by several action plans led by the Ministry for the Environment, in particular the Biodiversity Plan (2018) and the associated "Zero Plastic Waste at Sea" action plan (2020-2025).
At local level, the interest shown by local authorities and network operators in this subject often comes up against operating constraints, questions about strategy, the methodologies to be applied, the roles of each party and the return on investment.
OiEau and Cedre, with the support of the Loire Bretagne Water Agency, have launched a support and action-oriented network for local authorities, in order to encourage innovation and the exchange of feedback and best practices.
This Network is a project designed to put experts and local authorities in touch with each other in the fight against waste in sewerage systems. Finally, a dedicated website and a range of tools will be made available.
An online survey on expectations and practices
One of the first stages of the project is the online launch on 21 May of a survey aimed at local authorities to identify the obstacles and levers to combating waste in networks.
