French expertise in water and agriculture sectors presented to a high level Armenian delegation

Published on 04/11/24

From 7 to 14 April, OiEau organised the visit of a high-level Armenian delegation to the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur region and to Paris on behalf of the French Development Agency (AFD).

Made up of the Deputy Ministers for the Economy, Territorial Administration and Infrastructures, the Environment, Finance, and the Water Committee, this study trip focused on key issues for the development of the water and agriculture sectors, in which French expertise is highly relevant.

Meetings were organised with public players at central, regional and local level, as well as with private, academic and research players. They provided an opportunity to present French practices in the field of:

  • Agricultural land management,
  • Institutional management and integrated management of water resources,
  • Agricultural development,
  • Adaptation to climate change.

This study trip provided an opportunity to fuel and deepen discussions on the themes of land consolidation, water service pricing, the role of user associations, the structuring of value chains downstream of irrigated perimeters, knowledge of and consideration for the impacts of climate change in the formulation of sectoral strategies and reforms, integrated management of water resources in catchment areas, and so on.

First of all, I was impressed to see the French expertise in the field of water management. [Following this mission], if I had to identify the needs in the environmental sector in Armenia, I would mention strengthening the system for monitoring and managing water resources at basin level.
Mr. Tigran GABRIELYAN

Armenian Deputy Minister for the Environment

I was very interested in the advisory system [of the chambers of agriculture] that we were able to study during this study visit. I would like to study the replicability of this system [of chambers of agriculture] and define the levers and players involved in setting up such an advisory system in Armenia.
Mr. Arman KHOJOYAN

Armenian Deputy Minister of the Economy, responsible for Agriculture
