The project in brief

PROGIRESS aims to strengthen the resilience of surface water systems (Senegal River Basin – BFS) and groundwater systems (Senegal-Mauritanian Aquifer Basin – BASM) to climate change by improving the monitoring and sustainable management of water resources and ecosystems.

The initiative is structured around three specific objectives (SO) designed to improve the state of resources and regional governance:

  • SO1: The monitoring and sustainable management of surface and groundwater resources are strengthened,
  • SO2: The state of natural resources and biodiversity is improved,
  • SO3: The promotion of hydrodiplomacy to make water a lever for peace and shared development.

OiEau's missions

As part of SO2, OiEau is contributing its technical and methodological expertise to build the capacity of local stakeholders in the field of integrated water resources management (IWRM).

It is involved in outputs 2.1 (operational establishment of the BFS observatory in the Fouta-Djalon Massif) and 2.3 (implementation of priority studies and pilot projects targeting OS2), through

  • assistance to the OMVS, particularly on governance and monitoring indicators for the Fouta-Djalon Massif observatory,
  • capacity building and coordination support (notably through support for the Consultative Committee of Development Partners – CCPD),
  • the completion of at least one study and the implementation of pilot projects to test integrated management solutions.
