The project in brief

The glossary aims to facilitate understanding by the widest possible audience of more than 2,100 terms in the field of water and aquatic environments. Each term is the subject of a specific article, presenting:

  • one or more definitions associated with a particular meaning (common, technical or regulatory) and a source;
  • one or more related themes;
  • if necessary, an acronym, one or more synonyms, one or more illustrations;
  • links to other terms in the glossary that are useful for understanding, or reference documents, or other additional resources;
  • its translation and definition in English and Spanish.

The glossary is structured around 17 themes: Environment and Habitat, Species, Resource Quality, Resource Quantity, Hydromorphology, Climate, Health, Opinion and Society, Environmental Economics, Data and Information Systems, Research, Development and Innovation (RDI), Water and Environment Management, Policy, Risk, Pressure, Drinking Water and Sanitation, and Use.

It can be consulted online, but can also be downloaded in various formats for reading and printing (PDF), use with a spreadsheet (TSV), use with web applications (JSON-LD) and semantic applications (RDF-XML, OWL).

It is built according to semantic web standards (RDF, SKOS, SPARQL, etc.), enabling the dissemination of structured and optimised information for more efficient use and automated reuse by search engines and websites.
