The project in brief

Excessive use of water is leading to depletion and pollution of this vital resource. As part of a significant paradigm shift, the Kyrgyz authorities plan to strengthen the protection of water resources by promoting rational use through strong regulatory functions.

This involves setting up and institutionalising these functions, supporting the introduction of a system of water use permits that will enable proper monitoring of quantity and quality parameters.

Expected impact:

  • Efficient and innovative systems for accounting and planning water resources, authorising and pricing water use, operational throughout the country.
  • Improved knowledge of sustainable water use, thanks to better data management and the active involvement of stakeholders.

OiEau's missions

OiEau is providing institutional support to the Kyrgyz administration, in particular the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology & Technical Supervision (MinNature), to ensure the sustainable use of water resources based on accounting management of the resource and the development of a permit policy.

To achieve this, the project will focus on 3 main pillars:

  • Water resource planning
  • Water use - licensing and pricing
  • Stakeholder participation & data management.
