Aquatic Biodiversity Letter - June 2025 - TaxRef, a natural heritage inventory system

The May issue of the "Aquatic Biodiversity" newsletter has been published.
In the spotlight this month: TaxRef, a natural heritage inventory system.
In his notebooks, it draws plants, insects, animals...
It names them, writes down their names and classifies them.
From its observations, species, genera and families are born...
The classification of living organisms is the backbone of knowledge.
In the digital age, it can be found in a reference system called TaxRef, which is an inventory of natural heritage.
TaxRef is 20 years old. To celebrate its anniversary, we are featuring it in our ‘Headlines’!

TAXREF is the nomenclature and taxonomy reference system for all organisms living in mainland France and overseas territories.
Within the National Inventory of Natural Heritage (INPN), it forms the backbone of species knowledge:
it enables the structured exchange of information on specific biodiversity;
it is the only complete inventory of species present in France, and only half of these have at least one occurrence record in the Natural Heritage Inventory Information System (SINP).
