Reuse of treated urban wastewater - OiEau/SCP training on a pioneering site in Clermont-Ferrand

For over 10 years, OiEau has been providing training in the reuse of treated urban wastewater (WW REUSE). But the training course held in June has a very special flavour!
Since 2023, with the Water Plan and regulations now favourable to WW REUSE, demand for training in the use of non-conventional water has been growing strongly.
At the beginning of June, OiEau and its partner Société du Canal de Provence (SCP) held a training session on WW REUSE at the Trois Rivières wastewater treatment plant in Clermont-Ferrand.
This wastewater treatment plant treats wastewater from the Clermont-Ferrand metropolitan area, and has the unique distinction of being both one of the first historical WASW operations in France (1996) and the 1st French site whose effluent is authorised for irrigating food and seed crops under the latest regulatory framework.
In fact, the facility has successfully complied with the new - and very demanding - French regulations (decree of 18 December 2023) linked to the application of the European regulation of 25 May 2020.
In April, the Limagne Noire ASA (Authorised syndicate association), a group of 55 farmers covering 750 hectares, received the go-ahead from the Puy de Dôme Prefecture to reuse treated wastewater from the Trois Rivières treatment plant for a period of 15 years. It will benefit from this alternative water resource, enabling it to secure harvests in the event of drought.
