19 November: World Toilet Day - Sanitation systems must be developed
The aim of World Toilet Day is to raise public awareness of toilet issues and to draw attention to the 3.5 billion people who do not have access to safe sanitation facilities.
This year's theme is "Accelerating change". Because there is a global sanitation crisis and the world is taking too long to solve it.
A safe toilet is a sanitation system that treats or disposes of human waste on site, stores it safely before removal and off-site treatment, or is connected to a functioning sewerage system and treatment plant.
The very foundation of public health, with a major role in protecting the environment, access to sanitation and drinking water is a catalyst for all aspects of sustainable development and provides essential resilience against the effects of climate change.
Failure to achieve SDG 6 puts the entire 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at risk, with the poorest people, particularly women and girls, paying the highest price in terms of ill health, lack of education, lost productivity and general insecurity.
Every day, OiEau's experts work to ensure that everyone has access to efficient sanitation systems.
Whether collective or individual, in rural or urban areas, OiEau presents the solutions best suited to the local context, whether in terms of knowledge and training or in terms of the organisation of regulating or managing institutions.
With a number of experts in the field, and facilities that are unique in France, OiEau is able to meet the operational, technological and strategic expectations of wastewater professionals.
From a technical point of view, the OiEau Training Centre at its La Souterraine site has full-scale platforms dedicated to wastewater treatment, which recreate the working environment as closely as possible:
- a "Sanitation" teaching network, with a wide range of materials and equipment, including some of the most commonly used;
- a network that can be visited, enabling professionals to be trained and qualified to work in networks and confined spaces in complete safety;
- educational facilities representative of urban wastewater treatment;
- an area dedicated to on-site wastewater treatment, with a range of approved systems on display, above ground and without water supply.
For more than 30 years, in France and abroad, OiEau has been committed to providing effective, long-term support to players in the water, wastewater, waste and environment sectors.
