New: The cartographic atlas of Hydrological Situation Bulletins is now online!

Published on 08/27/25

Every month, the National Hydrological Situation Bulletin (BSH national) published by OiEau describes the state of water resources in mainland France during the previous month (precipitation, soil moisture, snow cover, river flows and dam fill levels, groundwater levels) with maps and an analysis of the situation.

Today, this data is brought to life in a visual, interactive tool that is accessible to all.

Why a cartographic atlas of BSH?

The eaufrance portal has just been given a brand new interface to better showcase public data on water and aquatic environments. Since 26 June, it has been home to a new tool, the BSH cartographic atlas, which aims to facilitate consultation of national monthly BSH maps from the last 10 years.

BSH data is rich in information, but technical. With the Atlas, we move from detailed analysis to an overview.

It allows users to

  • observe the hydrological situation over the last 10 years;
  • observe several themes at the same time (drought, groundwater, precipitation, etc.);
  • keep a history of consultations.

The Atlas does not replace the BSH. It makes it accessible to everyone.

How to use the BSH Atlas?

The consultation interface is simple and intuitive. It allows you to browse through 10 years of national hydrological situation reports.

In three steps, you can track changes in the hydrological situation over the last 10 years:

  • Select a period, either continuous or discontinuous;
  • Choose the theme of the maps you want to view;
  • View the maps.

This tool has been designed for local authorities, water professionals, curious citizens, etc.

The national hydrological situation bulletin (BSH national) describes the state of water resources on the metropolitan territory of the previous month.

It is the result of collaboration between different data producers and managers:

  • Météo-France for meteorological data (rainfall, soil moisture, snow cover);
  • the basin DREAL1 and Vigicrues service (ex. SCHAPI2) for data on river flows and the state of filling of dams (in collaboration with other national players, such as EDF3 , VNF4 and EPTB5 such as Seine Grands Lacs and Loire);
  • BRGM for groundwater levels. These data are produced ten times during the year, which explains their absence from certain bulletins;
  • the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) for observations on low water levels (between June and October).

The bulletin is produced under the aegis of the editorial committee made up of the various contributors to the BSH (data producers and managers), led by the International Office for Water (OiEau), in conjunction with the OFB and the Water and Biodiversity Directorate of the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
